About to move to California. First place I want to visit is Bakersfield, for the Bakersfield sound. I understand it may not be what it was in its prime, but what place is? I respect the guys and gals who made this sound happen. I also respect the fact that Californians can sing about Okies from Muskogee being that they have been infused with so much Okie and Arkie culture (et al). Chet, who I'm nonetheless a big fan of, admitted "we took the twang out of country". Bakersfield gave Country its edge back.

Bakersfield sound was in response to the smooth, Nashville country music that was dominating the pop charts in the 50's and 60's.

Early Bakersfield had a strong constant backbeat (think Tommy Collins), and many of those bands used drums. When the actual named genre took off (around the late 50's), Buck combined the driving backbeat of the early Bakersfield sound, and added the Ray Price-shuffle patterns (of the mid to late 50's), and that's where the freight train sound came from. Buck was also a very unique guitarist.
